EMBELLISHMENT

This page is a visual description of my work as a Surface Designer at Naina’s Apparel. During this time I learnt a lot about couture embroidery, applications, techniques and limitations. I developed a thorough understanding of integrating embroidery with patterns, material usage and working with artisans. I have since then continued to work with my connections over various projects.

The slideshow below shows some of the looks I’ve worked on during my employment as a Surface designer at Naina’s Apparel, Mumbai. Please note that I do not hold any rights to the following images and they’ve been sourced from Vogue.com after the release of each season.

EMBELLISHED SWATCHES

Embellishment is all bout adding detail and excitement to surface. Each detail and material is carefully handpicked to create an array of patterns that create a certain mood. Embellishment has the power to completely transform a blank canvas and create beauty. The slow nature of ‘Ari’ embroidery gives a lot of room or exploration and detail which is why it is a go to embroidery technique for a lot of luxury fashion and interior brands all over the world. These swatches have been designed by me and created with the help of skilled artisans in Mumbai.

SKILL

Having studied surface design in detail and working firsthand with artisans I am familiar with numerous techniques, their possibilities and limits and utility. I have a personal embroidery practice as well facilitated by my mother and grandmother teaching me these skill while growing up because I believe doing = learning.

ETHICS

Embellishment is an art form and I strongly believe in cherishing our artisans for creating so much beauty around us. Having worked with artisans I strongly feel the need to create better systems that highlight the artisans and give them the respect and support that they deserve. As a designer I aim to bridge the gap between the artisan and designer and question the roles that have been enforced upon us in the past.
